“Labor Day Mass”

01 September 2008

I have a number of musical influences, but one of them is church music. There’s something about the sound of an organ that I really do like. If you can’t stand the sound of church organs, then you will probably want to skip this one.

The name is kind of sarcastic… nothing else came to mind, though.

Music Remastered

Please give the songs I uploaded another listen if you like. I got some new equipment and the recording is more than 100% improved:

What Is Man?

Saturday afternoon “Serenade”

I’m not quite skillful enough to play this all live… this is three tracks mixed together.

I’ve been pondering the idea of a song based on On Truth for a while, but the songs usually came out very angry. Not that the anger isn’t justified in some way, but if it’s coming out unconsciously like that, that’s not something I want to release… I want any music I produce to inform, not inflict.

I came up with some lyrics to another tune that talk about the “tyranny of illusion” and I think that one has potential, but it’s still a work in progress.

I came up with this tune on Tuesday after a chat where Stef and another board member were discussing a possible style to the lyrics that this particular member had written. Stef was suggesting something bluesy, specifically something like John Lee Hooker.

I noticed that it was in a major key but was so, so sad… the tune I came up with is kind of an inversion. It’s minor, but it’s not so completely sad as minor keys are wont to be.

I’m calling it, for now, “What Is Man?”

Venite Adoremus

07 April 2008

Man, I am out of practice!

I had to record each voice in isolation–I couldn’t listen to the previously-recorded track and blend with it as I am wont to do when singing in a group, normally. That said, singing in unison is pretty difficult.

That said, I still get a kick out of it. :D

Why Venite Adoremus? I don’t think I know any secular a capella, and even if I did, I’d rather butcher a Christian song. ;)

Making Music

27 September 2007

It has been a really long time since I played the piano. I’ve been feeling the urge lately, so this morning I finally cleared stuff out of the way and sat down on the bench to tickle the ivories.

I am so out of shape, it’s not even funny… but even before I felt tired at all, my inspiration ran dry.

I mean, I only twiddled for about a half hour before I had to give up.

I found that I was tapping into some emotion while twiddling around, however, because I got up from the keyboard with my eyes being rather moist.

As a matter of fact, the songs that were coming out were very simple, and very sad… and very repetitive.

It’s actually kind of interesting. There are never any words that come to mind when I do that, just a stream of emotional consciousness. Today it was a simple, direct sadness that flowed forth. I’ll have to try again sometime soon. Perhaps I’ll record it then (I considered recording it today but felt it was a bit too much effort).
